Side Quests, Stitched Up Lessons, and a New Home in Portland
If we’re being honest, this week was a bit of a "squirrel brain" week for us at sunday+. You know the feeling, when you have a solid plan, but the "side quests" start calling your name?
As it turns out, those side quests ended up being exactly what we needed.
Meet Our Newest Team Member (The Singer 4452)
We officially brought our first sewing machine home! After a lot of research, we landed on the Singer 4452 Heavy Duty. It fit the budget and felt like a machine we could really grow with (and, let’s be real, one we felt comfortable troubleshooting when things inevitably went sideways).
The Reality Check: Our first few straight stitches? Flawless. We felt like pros. The first attempt at a standard zig-zag? Not so much.
We spent the week hitting snags (literally), adjusting tensions, and learning the language of the machine. These are simple things for seasoned pros, but for us, every tangled thread was a lesson. We realized that if we want to prototype at the speed of our ideas, we can’t always wait for lab time. We need to be able to "do the thing" right here at home. Now, we’re sewing every day, and the fear of the machine is officially gone.
Finding Our People: Upstart Collective
While we were busy wrestling with bobbins, we also took a trip to visit Upstart Collective here in Portland.
Sometimes you walk into a space and the vibe just clicks. After spending time with one of the founders and soaking up the energy of the community, we knew we had to be a part of it. We are officially members of the Upstart Collective!
Being a founder can feel like a solo sport, but spaces like Upstart remind us that we’re part of a much bigger team. We’re so excited to see how this community pushes sunday+ forward.
The Takeaway
This week taught us that distractions aren't always a bad thing. Sometimes a side quest, like learning a new tool or joining a new group is actually the shortest path to growth.
We hope you’re out there challenging yourselves to learn something that feels a little intimidating this week. It’s worth the tangled threads.
